Following Jesus the Light of the World (John 1:1-12)

Mrs. Magdalene Mbugua, August 21, 2016
Part of the Empowering Children series, preached at a Sunday 1st Service service

There is a unique group of sayings which are only found in the
Gospel of John. These catchphrases are used by Jesus. By
using these expressions in reference to himself, Jesus was
affirming his divine nature. The Gospel of John has seven (7)
Sayings that have the form, “I AM”. They are presented as
metaphors which carry substantial meaning. These metaphors
are not ordinary in their application. Instead they represent very
important and deep truths about who Jesus Christ was. Jesus
firmly pronounces; I am the bread (John 6:35): I am the door
(John10:7); I am the Shepherd (John 10:11); I am the Resurrection and
the life (John 11:22); I am the way (14:6); I am the vine (John 15:1); but
he also asserts: I am the light (John 8:12). In declaring Himself to be
the Light of the world, Jesus was claiming that He is the
exclusive source of Spiritual light. No other source of spiritual
truth is available to mankind.
Scripture reference: John 1:1 – 12
1.Discuss the variant uses of the statements “the word” by
John? Who is “the word” and what are his roles in the life of a
Christian as shown in the text?
2.a)How is John a witness to the true Light (John 1: 6 - 8).
b)Why does our world need the true light (John 1:4, 5, 9, 12).
c)Hopelessness challenges all of us at times. Do we need to
be concerned that the darkness will extinguish the light?
(John 1:10, 11).
d)In Matthew 5:15, Jesus declares that “no one lights a lamp and
hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that
those who come in can see the light” How is your life shining the
Light of Christ to those around you?
3.a)Consider your past and share personal areas in your life
where you have seen Christ illuminate His light?
b)Are there areas, even as a Christian, where you still desire
that Christ would illuminate His Glorious light? Share and
Commit this to Lord in Prayer.
Memory Verse
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the
world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have
the light of life (John 8:12, NIV)."
A Prayer for the Children: Salvation
“Lord, let salvation spring up within my children, that they may obtain
the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.” (Isa. 45:8; 2
