Empowering Children for Ministry (Matthew 18:1-10)

Prof. Lilian Wahome, August 28, 2016
Part of the Empowering Children series, preached at a Sunday 1st Service service

Compassion, an NGO that pursues to release Children from
poverty in Christ’s name, claims that, “from the very beginning to the
end, God speaks about the prominence of children through his Word.
They further enthuse: “Because children are important to God, children
are important to us.” We have a lot to learn from the Children of the
Bible. Going from Jesus Christ, to Isaac, Samuel, David, Timothy
among others. These Children of the Bible; took note of the voice
of God and the teachings of Christ. They were humble and
unquestionably obedient. They took their place in God’s work
and World with boldness. This study is thus intended to help us
discover how to include our Children in ministry without looking
down on them.
Scripture reference: Matthew 18: 1 – 6, 10.
1.In Verse 1- 4, what are the behaviours of a child that Christ
admonishes his disciples to emulate?
2.Jesus raises the bar of self-sacrifice when he says; “whoever
humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
a)What lessons of “unpretentiousness” humility and brokenness
do we learn from Children?
b)How can these values be harnessed for ministry, relationships
and at our work places?
c)Jesus Boldly affirms; "See that you do not look down on one of
these little ones.” In what ways do we (adults) look down on the
little Children? How can we overcome this?
3.Most of us are who, what and where we are today, because
of people who believed, involved and welcomed us. Jesus
says; “And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name
welcomes me.”
a)Share how you have inculcated the value of welcoming “the
little Children” in your own family?
b)In verses 6, Jesus declares that; “But if anyone causes one of
these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to
have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the
depths of the sea.” What did Jesus imply when he said this?
Memory Verse
"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones “(Matthew
18:10a, NIV).
Prayer for our Children
"God, please help my children develop servant's hearts that they may serve
wholeheartedly, as if they were serving the Lord, not men “(Eph. 6:7).
